Winners of the second annual Global Sources Electronics Design Awards were announced October 11, 2008 at the Regal Hong Kong Hotel.
Selected from over 200 entries from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea, the winning products were chosen by a panel of industry experts and executives based on technical design; features and functionality; visual appeal; and sales, marketing and export success.
The successful designs were then exhibited in a special hall at Global Sources' Electronics & Components Fair that ran October 12 to 15.
Bone-conducting radio communication headset
Shenzhen Voxtech Co. Ltd's VHZ radio communication headset received the Design of the Year Award for its dual-bone conduction speaker that allows receiving radio communications through the user's facial bones.
Suitable for tactical applications such as military, SWAT and riot police, the ear-free device converts radio-transmitted communications into mechanical vibrations that are interpreted as sound by the internal ear. "We have already developed a bone-conduction microphone. Our next model will combine both bone-conduction speaker and microphone," said marketing director Ken Chen.
Sound Technology (S.Z.) Co. Ltd won the GSEDA trophy for its D4.3M01R in-dash DVD player. It is equipped with a detachable slide-down 4.3in touchscreen TFT LCD, Dolby Digital, and input connections for USB, SD card and iPod. GPS, Bluetooth, RDS and analog/DVB-T tuner are optional. "A version with built-in HD Radio receiver is currently under development," said general manager Mae Sung.
Aware Electronic Inc. Ltd's A-Pad ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) captured the GSEDA for computer products. The shiny white, 900g device features a built-in Web camera, Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity, solid state drive (SSD) storage, and 7in touchscreen TFT LCD with swivel base. It features a central processor and chip module developed in-house by the company to ensure low power consumption. Optional features include 3.5G mobile Internet and GPS.
63in plasma TV with three HDMI inputs, 2x10W speakers
Huipu Electronics (Shenzhen) Co. Ltd's PD-63SB plasma TV swept the competition in the GSEDA flat panel TVs category with its 63in screen, 1920x1080 resolution, 16.77 million colors, 1,000cd/m2 brightness, and three HDMI input ports. It has two 10W stereo speakers on its sides that are detachable. Despite its size, the TV consumes a mere 3W or less on standby mode.
The VT601 iPod docking station with hi-fi vacuum tube speaker won the GSEDA home entertainment category for Shenzhen Wistar Technology Co. Ltd. The multifunction device features PLL AM/FM radio, clock, alarm time and sleep time display. It amplifies audio from connected devices and supports 70Hz to 20kHz frequency response range, 660mV input sensitivity and more than 70dB S/N ratio.
Wi-Fi digital photo frame supports e-mail reading/sending
The PhotoM@il Wi-Fi-enabled digital photo frame from Simon Trading Co. Ltd clinched the personal electronic category of the GSEDA. Featuring an 8in 24-bit TFT display with 800x600-pixel resolution, the PhotoM@il can also be used to receive and send e-mail. It has a built-in 2GB flash memory, a USB port and an SD/MMC/MS/MS-Pro/xD memory card reader.
"Watch out for the 10.4in version with touchscreen and virtual keyboard," said business director Raymond Tam. The larger version is targeted for release early next year.
Fast-charging USB car charger with changeable connectors
Infinia Electronics Co. Ltd's Razor Power 522 USB car charger convinced the GSEDA judges in the power supplies category. The device features an all solid-state component circuitry for fast-charging any single-cell battery-powered electronic gadget using any of the 10 bundled connectors. Supporting 11V to 28V DC input, the Razor Power 522 supports 1A at 5.3V to 5.6V DC (no load) or 4.8V to 5.3V DC power output.
The GSEDA for wireless communication and networking went to Yealink Network Technology Co. Ltd's VP-2008 IP Media Phone. The UMPC-styled SIP phone has a built-in CMOS camera and 7in color TFT LCD for 3-way video conferencing with PIP. It can also be used for browsing the Internet, e-mail, photo display, music/movie playing, and sending SMS or media files to mobile phones. "We are targeting service operators," stated David Chen, president of Yealink.
Surveillance camera concealed behind wide-angle mirror
Neotech Photoelectric Inc.'s CC-HS2-S1 concealed surveillance color CCD camera secured the GSEDA security products category. Hidden behind a wide-angle mirror, the winning design is suitable for high-level security and monitoring applications including banks, ATMs, airports and museums. It features a patented camera lens front cover, adjustable viewing angles, 1/3in Sony color Super HAD CCD sensor and 0.01lux sensitivity. It also comes with auto white balance, DNR, auto BLC, internal sync system, and 560 TVL resolution.
