Gas station LED display

The S23011BPG model from Shenzhen Xinsimei Electronics Co. Ltd has <0.1µs response time and operates under -30 to 70 C temperature.

Manufacturers are strengthening bases in home appliance, industrial control and traffic system sectors.

Suppliers of 7-segment LED displays in China continue to enhance product performance to match trends in application markets such as home appliances, instruments and meters, and traffic systems. In particular, they are developing more high-temperature variants able to withstand up to 105 C. More releases can render brighter and clearer alphanumeric figures yet have low power and longer life span. These have 7.1 to 101.6mm-high characters, 565 to 635nm wavelength and 2,000 to 3,900mcd luminous intensity. The units can last more than 50,000hr.

At the same time, makers sustain the production of small, lightweight and shock-resistant kinds.

Shenzhen Guangzhibao Technology Co. Ltd emphasizes white, blue and emerald-green models, and can provide full-color series on request. It conducts analysis to determine heat resistance, burn-in rate and caloric level. The enterprise’s factory is equipped with six ASM production lines and has a monthly capacity of 20 million units.

Makers remain confident the line will continue expanding, especially as the economic conditions in traditional export markets Europe and the US are not having a major impact on growth. China’s outbound shipments of LED products rose by 25 percent in 2011, and are expected to rise by about 30 percent in the months ahead. There is also government support via grants-in-aid, which subsidize about 30 percent of LED development costs.

The majority of China suppliers of 7-segment displays are found in Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Fujian provinces.

7-segment LED display selection

Products from China are classified by the number of digits or characters, connection mode, packaging and drive. Models categorized under the first two are 1 to 6-figure, and common anode and cathode types. In terms of packaging, there are SMD and plug-in versions. The first usually have one or two 7.1, 9.9, 13 or 14.2mm-high digits.

By drive, the selection consists of static status and dynamic kinds. The former, which is also called a DC drive, has a single-chip microcomputer per segment. Although this configuration makes programming simpler and the display brighter, it results in a complicated circuit due to the total number of drives and I/O pins required per setup.

Dynamic versions are more popular because they have a simpler electrical structure. All terminals are connected to a single pin. In addition, these types have a bit transmission gate circuit added for every nixie tube’s common port, which is controlled by a separate I/O pin. The bit appears only when the circuit is on. Dynamic units offer greater cost efficiency given the fewer ports and lower power used.

Across all types, a display normally requires one LED, with superbright versions integrating two or more. In single-diode configurations, the valve voltage drop is 1.8 to 2.5V and current is 5 to 10mA or up to 30mA in some models. The emission response time is below 0.1µs, and operating temperature is -30 to 70 C.

By character height, the choices are 7.1, 7.6, 8.1, 9.1, 9.9, 10.2, 12.7, 13.2, 14.2, 20.3, 25.4, 38.1, 45.7, 58.4, 101.6, 127 and 177.8mm. Units with three, four or five figures in 9.1, 9.9, 10.1 and 14.2mm make up the mainstream supply. These are widely used in digital indicators, instrument panels, multimedia devices and set-top boxes.

Various colors are available. These include red, yellow, blue, green, white, super red, yellow green and pale green, with the first five dominating output.

The LED chip is the main component in manufacturing 7-segment LED displays. It accounts for 80 percent of total costs.

Makers utilize red, green and blue high- and low-power versions of the input in square or wafer forms. Low-power units have 8, 9, 12 or 14mil. Most companies turn to Taiwan providers, importing from Japan and the US only on request.

The majority of mainland China suppliers will keep prices stable throughout 2012 to attract more orders.
