• Multistage cleaning systems: Besides prefilters, the latest releases are equipped with ESP, active oxygen, oxygen plus and CCO filters for enhanced purification. Makers are also using low-temperature plasma, enabling a bacteria-elimination rate of 99 percent per hour. Some units incorporate particle filters that deodorize the air and have an operational efficiency of up to 99.99 percent. Negative-ion generators are prevalent as well.
  
• Value-added features: Select units double as scent diffusers. These utilize two catalytic devices to spread fragrances. Such mechanisms can also function simultaneously and hold different kinds of essential oils. Some models have brushless motors, allowing for silent operation.
  
• Aesthetics: Aside from the typical red, silver and black housings, makers are launching designs in pink, blue, yellow and green. Cartoon character motifs are popular as well. Suppliers are also increasing output of columnar and vase-shaped units in addition to the usual square and rectangular models.
  
• Price forecast: Quotes are expected to rise by 5 to 10 percent in the months ahead because of mounting production costs and the strengthening yuan.
