Tableware makers in Vietnam are coming out with more designs that will appeal to eco-conscious buyers. Among the latest releases of the industry are dinner plates, serving trays, placemats and table runners made of bamboo, rattan, water hyacinth and other sustainable materials.

Eco-friendly options include asymmetrical and novelty shapes, as well as the regular round, rectangular, oval and square designs. Products come with a natural finish or in bright colors such as red, orange, green and yellow.

Located in Hanoi City, Huong Dang Artistic Handicrafts & Lacquerwares Co. Ltd offers handcrafted bamboo trays and bowls in the shape of boats, leaves and fruits. Color options include lime green, red, yellow and blue.

To expand further their selections, several manufacturers are combining different materials in a single product. Results of this trend include water hyacinth bowls with rattan trims, and rattan trays with bamboo bases. Bamboo bowls and trays with eggshell inlay are also offered.

Ngoc Dong Ha Nam, a supplier in Ha Nam province, offers rattan trays with bamboo bases or seagrass trims. The company’s selection also includes rattan charger plates and coasters with wooden beads.

Huong Dang Artistic Handicrafts & Lacquerwares offers bamboo rice bowls with eggshell inlay on the exterior.

Sector leverages location-based advantages

Skilled craftsmen across the country and the domestic availability of various raw materials enable tableware makers in Vietnam to produce a wide range of handcrafted environment-friendly designs.

Vietnam has more than 1,000 craft villages, including those producing wicker, ceramics and wooden items. These villages are home to carvers, weavers and other skilled artisans whose techniques have been passed down from previous generations.

Bamboo that is woven or spun to create dinner plates, serving trays, placemats and table runners come from Nam Dinh, Thanh Hoa, Ninh Binh, Son La, Yen Bai and Tuyen Quang provinces. Rattan, which is woven into serving trays, placemats and charger plates, is procured from Thanh Hoa, Lam Dong, Nghe An, Son La and Yen Bai provinces.
