Buzzer manufacturers expand SMD category to buoy line

Piezoelectric/ceramic buzzer

Changzhou Cxsound's model CX9035S SMD electromagnetic buzzer has 3kHz±500Hz resonant frequency, and 90dB minimum SPL at 10cm.

The widening adoption of microspeakers spurs the release of smaller configurations.

China makers of buzzers are boosting production of SMD types to match the miniaturization trend in electronics applications and compete with microspeakers. The SMD buzzer category’s share of output this year is expected to rise to 50 percent from 40 percent in 2012. Continuous yield increments will push this ratio further to about 60 percent by end-2014, by which time it will have dislodged rival DIP units out of the mainstream.

The growing emphasis on SMD models is in line with trends for more compact components to match increasingly portable devices. Makers such as Changzhou Cxsound Electronic Co. Ltd have developed 4x3x2mm buzzers. Changzhou Wujin Lianhua Electronics Co. Ltd, which devotes 60 percent of production to SMD types, offers 5x5x2mm varieties. Its largest buzzers measure 17x17mm.

Suppliers hope the shift to SMD will boost competitiveness against microspeakers, which are expected to surpass the former’s global sales due to the popularity of smartphones and tablet PCs.

Local companies predict annual revenue growth in the microspeakers line will reach 20 percent in coming years, double the 10 percent annual expansion forecast for buzzers. Some makers have, in fact, started increasing yield of microspeakers.

Buzzer manufacturers, however, remain confident of strong sales on the back of the component’s wide market base covering the communication, computer, consumer electronics, office automation and automotive electronics fields. Household appliances, electronic toys, instruments, and industrial, medical, safety and security products fuel demand as well. In particular, makers are looking to benefit from climbing demand for buzzers in the automotive electronics and medical equipment segments.

Besides following the miniaturization trend via SMD models, China companies are strengthening customization capability to meet diverse buyer requirements on operating voltage, consumption current, frequency and dimensions.

Development work likewise highlights better sound output. Makers offer electromagnetic units with a minimum sound pressure level of 70 to 95dB at 10cm, and piezoelectric versions supporting 70 to 120dB at rated voltage and similar working distance. The latter selection also includes 108dB and 100cm models.

For enhanced reliability, companies ensure products have lower power dissipation and longer life span. Despite the growing emphasis on SMD buzzers, companies will continue to offer DIP variants. Many leverage this type’s lower price, which is half that of SMD counterparts, to raise sales.

Overall and notwithstanding increasing competition from microspeakers, makers expect higher buzzerrevenue by year-end. Changzhou Cxsound targets a 30 percent rise, and Changzhou Wujin Lianhua about 20 percent. The latter plans to sustain this rate in 2014. China customs data indicate exports from January to June 2013 reached 90.06 million units. The annual value for 2012 was 185.35 million.

Worldwide, the line is expected to maintain 5 percent annual sales growth until 2015.

China remains the largest sourcing base for the line globally, responsible for more than 60 percent of total production.

More than 200 companies make up the local manufacturing base, 20 percent of which are foreign-invested. The majority of the operations are in the Pearl River and Yangtze River Delta regions. The key locations are the provinces of Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangsu, collectively churning out over 90 percent of the country’s yield.

About 60 percent of production is exported, mostly to Europe and North America. Suppliers are also exploring opportunities in South America and Asia while taking advantage of the expanding domestic market.

Diverse selection

Makers offer electromagnetic and piezoelectric buzzers in DIP and SMD configurations. They also turn out wire types.

In terms of driving signals, there are self- and external-drive units. The former dominate the lineup of Changzhou Cxsound. Changzhou Wujin Lianhua emphasizes the second version.

Electromagnetic variants have an operating voltage of 1.5 to 24V and a resonant frequency between 1 and 4kHz. These run on 35 to 60mA. By diameter, products measure 7 to 25mm.

Piezoelectric kinds come in 3 to 220V models, with mainstream units supporting less than 50V. These run on 1 to 5.8kHz. Compared with electromagnetic counterparts, the type has a lower current requirement of 5 to 20mA. It comes in 10 to 50mm-diameter versions.

Oscillators, housings and terminals are the major components and materials used in the manufacture of buzzers.

Electromagnetic types also require electromagnetic coils, magnets and vibration diaphragms, while piezoelectric kinds need related elements and vibration plates.

ABS, polyphenylene oxide, liquid crystal polymer and PBT are the choices for the housing. The terminals are usually tin-plated brass.

All manufacturing inputs come from local providers.

Makers are keeping prices at current levels in coming months despite rising labor expenditure and the strengthening yuan to remain competitive.
