Design variety leads promotional purse hanger line enhancements

Enhanced aesthetics are driving product differentiation efforts among suppliers of promotional purse hangers in China. Makers are exploring various shapes and adornments to boost visual appeal. This increased attention on design comes as the industry reaches a level of stability, allowing manufacturers to focus on R&D improvements instead of coping with volatile market dynamics.

Novelty contours are popular in nonfoldable options. Hexagon, butterfly and tote versions are among the best-sellers. HK Yida Accessories Co. Ltd’s 1023-16 model, for instance, resembles a small handbag. Several makers also offer custom services with this type of construction since it allows much room for design flexibility.

With regard to foldable pieces, releases in a circular configuration dominate. In fact, round purse hangers account for more than 70 percent of China’s total output in the line. That is because, together with heart-shaped variants, these are the easiest to mold and best accommodate the compact structure.

Decorative add-ons are also popular in increasing the visual appeal of models. Some suppliers incorporate soft PVC, crystals and synthetic gemstones in their products as adornments.

The first material is the least costly to utilize and allows a range of design possibilities because it yields to any shape that will fit the metal base. Further, the surface is suitable for opaque, transparent and colorful options.

Crystals and synthetic gemstones have a much higher perceived value. Embellishments made of aluminum and brass boost products’ marketability as well. Several suppliers are enhancing capability. To this end, some add electronic components, including flashing lights, which are among the popular features. These are triggered when a mobile phone in the hanging bag receives an incoming call.

China suppliers offer nonfoldable and foldable purse hangers. Models of the former type are priced 20 to 50 percent lower depending on the decorations and surface treatment.

Nonfoldable pieces: Low-end versions go for $0.30 and have basic electroplating, if any. Some are made of zinc alloy, while the very inexpensive options come in iron. Of the two materials, the second can hold more weight. Logos are printed on paper stickers, or applied via laser engraving or with epoxy coating.

Midrange nonfoldable purse hangers are quoted at about $0.40, and have electroplating and the same inputs as low-end releases. Methods of affixing logos include epoxy doming, laser engraving, embossing, debossing, pad printing and basic silk-screening. Synthetic gemstones are popular adornments.

Most upscale designs top at $0.50, and a select few are priced even higher. Models in this segment are made of zinc alloy, with gold or silver electroplating. Some suppliers use polishing and electroplating to achieve a clear and shiny surface. Decorations include synthetic gemstones as well.

Foldable purse hangers: Low-end pieces in this category go for $0.50 to $0.80. Adornments are soft PVC or epoxy resin, although several products have paper stickers instead. The typical packaging choices are simple polybags and paper boxes.

Midrange items are priced between $0.85 and $1.50. These are decorated with crystals or synthetic gemstones in a basic pattern. The exterior may be polished.

High-end foldable purse hangers are quoted from $1.55 to $2. Electroplating on the surface is available in various colors, including gold. Upscale pieces are often adorned with crystals and synthetic gemstones, and brass and aluminum ornaments.

Logo application: The methods that suppliers adopt in placing company trademarks on purse hangers depend on the surface material. For instance, pad printing and silk-screening are suitable for PVC and metal. Between the two processes, the former is preferred for multicolor and complex emblems.

Laser engraving, meanwhile, is suitable for metal versions for economic reasons. This procedure, however, yields only solid hues, thereby limiting usability.

Another inexpensive option is offset printing on paper stickers to be glued on the purse hangers. The process is recommended for large-volume orders because when used for small purchases, it becomes costly.

Presetting the logo in the mold also reduces outlay, but the MOQ has to be 10,000 pieces to balance the overhead of creating a customized cast.

Price projections & rising costs

In the next six months, prices are expected to increase by 5 to 10 percent mainly due to the surging worker and material outlay, and the yuan’s appreciation.

The first affects promotional purse hanger suppliers significantly because the industry is labor intensive. Amid rising costs in prime areas in China, companies have to invest more in improving employees’ living conditions, training and wages. In Shenzhen city of Guangdong province, a major hub for the line, the government-imposed minimum monthly salary of $203 in the beginning of 2011 is 20 percent higher YoY. In nearby Guangzhou, another manufacturing center for purse hangers, $200 is the standard.

Metal rates are also affecting spending. Although these have recently become stable, suppliers warn that any fluctuation will cause quote adjustments.

Inflation in China and the yuan’s appreciation are aggravating the outlay problem. Most companies even predict a further 5 percent increase in the currency’s value this year. Such rise will directly push up export prices.
