Micro speaker

Mingjing's 20 model has a Mylar cone and metal frame. It measures 20mm in diameter.

Manufacturers are enhancing processes and expanding capacity to match rising demand.

China suppliers of microspeakers are striking a balance between raising audio quality and power output on one hand and reducing product size to suit target application devices on the other. The typical input power ranges from 0.5 to 5W, but some models reach 10W or even surpass it. In terms of size, more releases are smaller than 10mm.

Even as they pursue miniaturization further, makers are increasing sensitivity and fidelity, extending the frequency width, limiting distortion and noise, and reducing the resonance frequency. Many are boosting power handling. At Mingjing Electronic Co. Ltd, engineers are looking to raise speaker volume.

New categories are gaining traction as well. Some manufacturers are preparing for a potential rise in demand for composite-diaphragm microspeakers owed to the explosive growth of smartphones. Shipments of the handheld devices are forecast to climb by 50 percent YoY this year. As such, the Ventronics Group is working to add two production lines to launch composite-diaphragm models.

Makers are likewise developing variants that incorporate receivers. These have the advantages of compact size and multifunctionality, and are enjoying widening adoption in mobile phones and laptops.

Despite the trend for smaller microspeakers, enterprises such as Shenzhen Honson Electronics Technology Co. Ltd hope to boost production of units with dimensions larger than 40mm to match. Such configurations are suitable for home theater systems, portable audio players, karaoke machines, computers and even earphones.

A number of makers are developing water-resistant microspeakers.

Companies are also upgrading manufacturing techniques and processes to improve efficiency and provide better OEM, ODM and EMS solutions. They are hoping to achieve economies of scale to cushion the effects of mounting costs, an appreciating yuan and falling quotes due to strong competition. Many are undertaking measures to train and keep skilled workers.

Some are expanding capacity to meet growing demand. Mingjing, which has a monthly output of 6 million units, intends to push capacity up 40 percent by adding two production lines and 30 workers.

Makers also pursue vertical integration to lower costs while enriching their selections. Several, for instance, carry buzzers, speaker boxes and car speakers.

China’s microspeakers field is riding the robust local electroacoustic components industry, which is expected to gain strength further in the 12th Five-Year Plan. The country is forecast to account for more than 40 percent of the global market by 2015. Aggregate output will reach 12.8 billion units at an annual growth of 10 percent. Exports will hit 8.9 billion units by end-2015.

More than 50 percent of China’s total yield in the line is shipped overseas. Emerging markets, particularly in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, are seen as key destinations in the months ahead. To grab more orders, companies are fortifying QC, with an eye on the high-end segment.

OEM/ODM projects dominate, representing over 70 percent of contracts. At Shenzhen Honson, such orders account for more than 90 percent of business. The customized specifications cover dimensions, housing material and terminal type. Makers can also adjust the power and current rating, frequency range, resonance frequency and sound pressure level.

China has about 50 homegrown manufacturers. The companies are mostly found in Guangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shandong provinces. Midsize and large operations generate $20 million, with some tier 1 suppliers earning up to $50 million a year.

Mylar microspeakers lead

China makers offer paper cone, vibration, ultrathin and Mylar types. The last remains the most popular category. It is also cost-efficient and easy to manufacture.

Mylar microspeakers are best-sellers at Mingjing. The company’s round 20mm unit can be made into a Mylar, paper or silver cone with a plastic or metal frame. It is suitable for desktop and notebook PCs, earphones, headsets and -phones, toys and mobile phones. The maker can customize the thickness, temperature and water resistance levels.

In terms of shape, round and oval microspeakers dominate output. These versions are widely adopted in cell phones. Buyers will also find a good supply of rectangular and square kinds, which are often found in laptops and PDAs. Runway types are likewise on offer.

Ventronics has launched runway microspeakers. Its VTSH1524I-01-W2-J2P1 model has 7.4ohm±10 percent DC and 8ohm±15 percent AC impedance rates at 2kHz and a resonance frequency of 700Hz±20 percent.

Shenzhen Honson’s quadrilateral variant measures 40x40mm. The Y040N008003-R1122H model features a voice coil diameter of 16 core PSV. It supports 220Hz to 18kHz frequency, 4ohm±15 percent rated impedance and 5W maximum input power.

The selection in China also includes single- and composite-diaphragm microspeakers. As regards diameter, releases range from 7 to more than 100mm.

All products meet RoHS and CE requirements. Some even conform to SGS, FCC and REACH. Suppliers use magnets, diaphragms, voice coils, metal, plastic, adhesive and rubber for manufacture. The mainstream choices are neodymium, AlNiCo and ferrite for the magnet, Mylar, paper and PET for the diaphragm, and copper and aluminum wire for the voice coil. SPCC is widely adopted for the frame. The bulk of these components are sourced domestically, and the rest are from Japan, Taiwan, and other countries and regions depending on clients’ requirements.

The more than 100 percent increase in the cost of magnet materials pushed up microspeaker prices in recent months. Some companies expect quotes to stabilize given the same forecast for input spending. Any price markups will be limited to 5 percent.

Besides material expenditure, manufacturers will peg adjustments on the yuan and US dollar exchange rate.
