Trendy grips, 'green' materials enliven flatware line

Makers spice up selections via incorporation of stylish handles and use of eco-friendly materials

TOP TRENDS

• Unconventional handle styles: Many of the latest models now come with columnar, looped, spiral and other fancy-shaped grips as makers veer away from the traditional wide and teardrop designs. These are sometimes made of wood or plastic.
  
• Eco-friendly materials: Bamboo and wood, including oak, pine and eucalyptus, are fast becoming the input of choice for suppliers because these boast greater biodegradability and cost less than the mainstream stainless steel. Plastic, which can be recycled, has also become a popular alternative as it is easier to mold and absorbs color better.
  
• Aesthetics: To enhance sheen, flatware pieces are plated in chrome, copper, silver or gold. Colorful titanium-coated versions are available as well. Several releases also come in bright pastel shades. Some models intended for children feature a decaled cartoon or animal motif.
  
• Manufacturing: The majority of designs are crafted via stamping as the procedure is fast, simple and cost-effective. Forging is often done on upscale models because this method yields thicker and heftier designs.
