China suppliers of water-distribution systems are rolling out products that are more versatile, consequently providing users with greater savings. In doing so, companies hope to expand market reach not only within the garden and lawn segment but in other applications as well.

Under this effort, makers of nozzles and wands are increasing the number of multispray designs in their selections. Recent releases come with three to nine watering modes to suit several types of plants. Many are also being promoted for car washing and other cleaning jobs.

Spray options include flat, vertical, shower, cone, fan, center, jet, mist and soaker patterns. Ningbo Wande Tools Industrial Co. Ltd, for instance, offers nozzles that can be adjusted from fine mist to jet stream. Models from Green Frog Garden Tools Co. Ltd can provide a watering pressure of 20 to 100psi, depending on the technique chosen.

For sprayers, the latest variants are designed to accommodate not only water but other substances as well. Zhejiang Wenxin Mechanical & Electric Co. Ltd has come out with a gas-powered unit that can be loaded with cleaning liquid or disinfectant. Meanwhile, Kingxxel Tools Co. Ltd’s model GS-3.6 watering cart is suitable for applying fertilizer.

To stimulate market interest further, suppliers are incorporating a host of user- and environment-friendly features in their water-distribution systems. Kingxxel, for instance, has fitted its watering cart with a rechargeable 3.6V Li-ion battery that complies with RoHS. At Xiamen Xiangfeng Water-saving Equipment Co. Ltd, recent releases include a turf watering controller with an integrated electronic chip that enables users to set a specific time of operation.

In irrigation systems, R&D work is centered on drip and sprinkler types. The products currently account for 20 to 30 percent of total output and exports of garden water-distributiion devices, in contrast to their 10 to 15 percent share two years ago.

Chinadrip Irrigation Equipment (Xiamen) Co. Ltd offers a microsprinkler system that directs water straight to the roots, thereby providing greater water savings.

For added variety, aesthetics is also receiving increased attention. Variants in bright colors such as blue and yellow are on the rise, in addition to the usual green.

China’s selection of garden water-distribution systems includes sprayers, nozzles, hoses and reels, sprinklers and timers. The first four categories are the most popular, accounting for more than 80 percent of the industry’s output and exports.

Most sprayers are handheld compression types with a capacity of 1 to 5L. They generally have a PP or PE body, an ABS or steel pump, and a metal or plastic nozzle. Designs that can hold more than 5L have an aluminum alloy spray wand. Quotes begin at $1.

Available starting at $0.35 per piece, individually sold spray nozzles and guns come in metal, plastic or a combination. These usually have a diameter of 3 3/4in, with basic and midlevel designs offering a single spray pattern. Upscale versions can often be adjusted from a fine spray to a powerful jet.

Typically not exceeding $0.50 per meter, most China-made garden hoses are made of PE or PVC. Diameters vary from 16 to 60mm, while lengths are between 100 and 1,000m.

Reels, meanwhile, are constructed from aluminum alloy, ABS or PP. Priced $10 to $25 or more, designs can accommodate a 15 to 45m 1/2in hose, a 35m 5/8in type or a 33m 3/4in variant.
