Aiming for a differentiation advantage amid keen price competition, suppliers of EVA clogs in China are updating the physical appearance and accessories of their latest releases. Some new models feature embossed motifs on the upper. Others have floral, triangular, rectangular or star-shaped holes instead of the traditional round and oval types. Products are decorated with beads and ribbons to increase visual appeal further. A number of makers are offering decorative attachments as well. The charms, which are typically made of PVC or acrylic, come in various cartoon character and animal designs. Several companies have also released clogs suitable for winter wear. These are lined with fleece or faux fur. To ensure quality, models are checked for defects before shipment. Inspections are done in-house unless buyers request for third-party testing. Customers often shoulder the fees, although a number of businesses are willing to split the charges in half if orders exceed 50,000 pairs. Quotes range from $0.85 to $3.30. Size is the main price determinant. Generally, men’s styles are 10 percent more expensive than women’s versions. About 60 percent of China’s export-oriented sandals suppliers also offer EVA clogs. Very few, however, specialize in this kind of footwear. These are usually small plants that allocate at least 50 percent of capacity to the line. Larger factories are often equipped for integrated production. They make casual and sports shoes as well. Demand for EVA clogs, particularly from the US and Europe, has been on a downward trend since 2007. Previously, the line accounted for 50 to 80 percent of footwear shipments in some companies, but at present it only represents 30 to 40 percent of releases sent abroad. In spite of this, many businesses continue to offer EVA clogs. Rather than focusing on traditional markets, they are boosting exports to Brazil, Egypt, India and the Middle East, where demand for such products is still healthy.
