LEDs, solar power lead 'green' trends in security lighting

Suppliers are also adding security features to enhance functionality.

Shift to LED: Responding to increasing demand for more energy-efficient products, manufacturers are shifting to LED light sources, expecting to complete the transition in mainstream models this year. A few companies, however, continue to use halogen lamps for high-power variants as solid-state lighting technology is more costly.
Solar power in outdoor units: Suppliers have introduced solar power panels for outdoor models. They are also developing optional power modules. Equipped with a rechargeable NiMH or lithium battery, such security lights can work independent of an external power supply.
Enhanced security via camera: Some units come with a built-in camera and DVR module for added value. These can capture images or video and record them onto an SD card. They adopt a CMOS sensor, and support VGA output and MPEG-4 format. Output of this type will increase in coming months.
Compact designs: Trends are moving toward slim, highly integrated and camouflage forms. New models include multilamp types that allow each light to be adjusted independently and cover larger or more complex areas.
