The Playbulb Solar light is water resistant up to 1.5m.
Smart lights are already common inside the home, many capable of being controlled by Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and apps. A US-based startup, Mipow, aims to bring intelligent lights outdoors through its Kickstarter hit, the Playbulb Solar.
The Playbulb, exceeding three times its crowdfunding goal and is set for shipping in May, is a Bluetooth 4.1 solar and LED light that is portable and can float on water. It has a mono pod or spike that lets it cling to the ground or on walkways. A sensor that switches it on and off automatically at night and day, respectively, is also integrated.
The smart floating light can create different ambiances in gardens and pools, or inside the home, by emitting a range of hues. Users can choose from 16 million RGB colors and pair multiple units by one tap on the compatible Android/iOS app. Bluetooth range is up to 10m.
The IP68 1.5m water-resistant Playbulb is powered by a built-in Li-ion battery. The model’s 1W 6V solar panel charges the light eight to 12 hours under the sun. Working time can reach 25 hours.
The innovative product won the Red Dot award for outstanding design in 2016.
