Facts About Modular office furniture
The first offices date to ancient Rome, where scribes kept records on scrolls. Furnishings were minimal - perhaps a stool or two - since most of the scribes' work was done standing up. During the Industrial Revolution, "offices" began to appear as places designated for handling orders, filing and keeping track of accounts. Furnishings were mainly heavy desks, in poorly ventilated rooms.
In 1915, the "Modern Efficiency Desk" came on the scene - with a flat top and drawers that let managers could easily see what employees were doing. The first modular furniture was made for kitchens, in Belgium in 1932. By the 1960s, it was also becoming popular in offices because it provided flexibility for businesses to change layouts as they grew. Today, modular furniture is used in offices around the world.
