New light switches smarter, more appealing

Makers are adopting wireless technologies, and expanding design and finishing options to widen market reach.

TOP TRENDS

• Wireless solutions: A number of China suppliers are adopting Z-Wave and other wireless technologies to make light switches more user-friendly. Many new models can be operated remotely via a computer or mobile phone.
  
• Wider design selection: Square and rectangular light switches remain popular. Most makers, however, are expanding selections to include shapes for a variety of interior and exterior styles, customs and cultures.
  
• More finishing options: In terms of surface treatment, gold and silver paint are widely adopted on stainless steel models. White is still the mainstream for plastic types, but other hues are available.
  
• Longer life span: Many recent releases are capable of supporting 80,000 to 100,000 on/off cycles. In contrast, most older models can be turned on and off a maximum of 80,000 times.
  
• Export projection: Overseas shipments are expected to grow no more than 5 percent in 2012 amid the sluggish economies of North America and the EU.
