Hardside luggage
Zhejiang Bubule's set of 20, 24 and 28in hardside luggage uprights are made of PC and have polyester lining.

Hardside luggage makers are adopting alternative materials that are less-heavy but remain sturdy.

China suppliers of hardside luggage are developing lighter yet more durable products to strengthen competitiveness in the export market.

The initiative comes in response to a decline in production as heightened airline baggage weight restrictions spur demand for less-bulky softside models. Current yield in the featured category contributes only 20 to 40 percent to the country’s total luggage output.

To boost buyer interest in hardcase luggage, manufacturers are bypassing conventional ABS and PP materials for innovative options such as PC/ABS. Although leading brands, including Samsonite, already utilize the hybrid, its use is a relatively new trend in China’s travel bag industry.

The synthetic combines the key advantages of PC and ABS, with the first contributing impact and heat resistance. ABS, meanwhile, acts as a chemical stress buffer to balance high flow and collision strength during processing. Together, the components decrease melting viscosity. Models in the mixture weigh 25 percent less than regular ABS types.

Apart from the plastic blend, companies are investing in pure PC designs, especially for top-of-the-line pieces. The material is the lightest hardshell luggage alternative. Given similar dimensions, PC luggage weighs almost equal to softside variants. PP items are 30 percent heavier.

Moreover, PC is firm and flexible, and can support 100kg at most. The input withstands temperatures between -40 and 125 C, and is nontoxic, odor-free and water-repellent. It is usually employed in bullet-resistant glass, goggles and car headlights.

Businesses are also maintaining the development of aluminum luggage. Aside from being lightweight, the metal is sturdier than plastic. Popular upscale releases are one-piece designs made using hot-press machines.

For lower-priced releases, suppliers typically employ MDF or ABS frames that are later covered with aluminum sheets.

Aiming to promote the line further, China suppliers of hardside luggage are improving usability and visual appeal.

In particular, factories are breaking the notion that products are limited to a fixed amount of storage space. The latest models are fitted with expandable, accordionlike panels made of fabric such as 600d polyester oxford. They can increase holding capacity by 5 to 8cm.

To boost maneuverability, several releases incorporate four inline skate or 360-degree multidirection wheels. They utilize PVC, PU, ABS or rubber, and are often noiseless.

Those adopting two rear wheels are fixed with two front stands to maintain balance.

Companies are also investing in ergonomically designed trolleys and handles. When pulled, the luggage leans at a 45 to 60-degree angle to minimize arm strain. Trolleys are often in aluminum alloy and feature 2 to 4-level telescoping.

Moreover, suppliers continue to include user-friendly add-ons such as pockets and organizers. Recent styles boast separate compartments for shoes and underwear, and water-resistant pouches for toiletries. Some pieces incorporate hangers and elastic cross straps for holding items down. Models can have exterior luggage belts as well to help secure closures. Others come with digital combination or TSA-approved locks.

As regards aesthetics, makers are producing more fashionable and feminine designs. Vibrant colors are used instead of the traditional black, brown and blue. Items also adopt animal prints.

Further, companies are adding a glazed layer, which creates a polished look that can be wiped clean easily. Suppliers, however, are still developing a scratch-resistant version of the finish.

The main quote determinants for China-made hardside luggage are size and number, manufacturing complexity, materials, and function.

Individual models between 12 and 20in are below $15. They are usually carry-on baggage. Larger pieces that measure 16 to 28in start at $15 and can exceed $30. Luggage sets, meanwhile, are more competitively priced. To illustrate, a collection of 20, 24 and 28in uprights ranges from $50 to $65.

As regards production, OBM releases are valued two times higher than OEM types as suppliers need to allot additional spending to R&D.

In terms of materials and function, the least-expensive models are below $15. They are made of locally sourced ABS and may have 150 to 190 tex polyester lining. Releases use two PVC or ABS inline skate wheels and aluminum trolleys. There is one main compartment and an exterior pocket.

Priced at $15 to $30, midrange variants utilize ABS, PP or aluminum. Pieces adopt 210 tex polyester jacquard lining, and EVA or PE sponge padding. Metal or plastic frames are employed together with rubber or plastic edge guards. Multidirection and noiseless wheels are incorporated. Several organizers are also added.

Versions quoted above $30 are considered high-end. The selection comes in PC, aluminum, PC/ABS, or imported ABS or PP. In particular, styles adopting the first input are valued 5 to 10 percent more than traditional kinds. Aluminum items are 40 percent costlier than plastic releases, with some reaching $70.

Regardless of shell material, most designs in this segment use polyester jacquard or oxford lining. Many utilize four 360-degree ABS, PU or rubber wheels, and 2 to 4-level telescopic trolleys.

In the past quarter, hardside luggage prices were augmented 5 to 15 percent amid mounting material and labor rates. Suppliers expect quotes to rise another 5 to 10 percent in coming months should the trend continue.
