Convenient access to various raw materials and skilled artisans enable wicker furniture makers in Vietnam to offer competitively priced handcrafted models made of rattan or water hyacinth.

About 60 percent of the industry’s rattan requirements are procured from Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Bac Giang, Quang Ninh, Hoa Binh, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and other provinces. Imported versions are typically from neighboring countries such as Cambodia and Laos.

Water hyacinth, meanwhile, is primarily sourced from suppliers in the Mekong Delta region.

Bamboo, which is used to make furniture frames, can be procured from the provinces of Cao Bang, Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho, Hoa Binh, Son La, Tuyen Quang, Bac Kan, Yen Bai, Son La, Nghe An and Thanh Hoa in the north, and Tay Ninh and Binh Thuan in the south. In the Central Highlands, the provinces of Kon Tum and Lam Dong are the main sources.

In terms of access to labor, Vietnam is home to craftsmen whose skills have been passed from previous generations. The country has more than 700 craft villages that make bamboo, rattan and rush products.

Apart from having domestic access to raw materials and skilled labor, Vietnam has policies and programs supporting manufacturers of bamboo, rattan and rush products. Preferential tax policies, for instance, are offered to organizations involved in planting, collecting and processing bamboo and rattan.

The private sector has also initiated several programs to encourage sustainable production and boost exports. The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in cooperation with Oxfam International and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, has organized workshops on sustainable and responsible production of bamboo and rattan.

The World Wildlife Fund, meanwhile, is working with communities and companies in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam to achieve a more sustainable rattan product supply chain.
