Besides using treated fabrics, sportswear suppliers are improving designs and including safety add-ons. Sports apparel makers in China are directing product development endeavors toward enhancing comfort and utility. With this objective in mind, companies have been adopting functional materials in their latest releases. Quick-drying, anti-bacterial, odor-resistant and UV-protective fabrics are typically used for basketball and soccer jerseys. Cycling tops come in breathable and moisture-absorbent textiles. Several high-end styles incorporate organic cotton or bamboo charcoal. The inputs not only boost evaporation and bacterial protection but are also environment-friendly. Printed graphics are being applied via dye sublimation. The method is said to provide more vivid and colorfast details without obstructing breathability. Warmth retention and water resistance are emphasized in ski jackets. Materials employed for the shell usually have an acrylic or PU coating. The water resistance level ranges from 3,000 to 20,000mm. Zippers that help prevent liquids from seeping in are utilized as well. In addition, many new designs come in bright colors or are fitted with reflective tape to make the products detectable even in low-visibility weather conditions. A number of suppliers integrate Recco reflectors into the clothing. Manufacturers are also improving sporstwear construction. Athletic tops and bottoms have sturdy flatlock stitches on the seams. Recently launched cycling shorts incorporate padding, which reduces chafing caused by long periods of riding. Odor-resistant and anti-bacterial fabrics are often used as the cushion’s top layer or cover. Ski jackets boast zipped side vents that aid in regulating body temperature. Further, multiple pockets serve as storage for various accessories and electronic devices. China’s sports apparel exporters are optimistic that overseas sales will grow in the year ahead. Some even project revenue will increase 10 to 20 percent. The industry, however, continues to face cost- and currency-related challenges. Rates for commonly adopted materials are fluctuating and labor expenses remain high. The yuan’s appreciation adds to suppliers’ difficulties. Moreover, businesses are concerned about the economic situation in the US and Europe. While several companies have been boosting shipments to Latin America, Africa, Russia and the ASEAN, the two are still the key markets. The debt crisis is expected to affect consumer spending, which could translate into slower demand. A few makers are also worried about possible payment delays or order cancellations.
