Japan Rohm Co. Ltd announced that it has developed ambient light sensors compatible under any light source, which have excellent spectral sensitivity.
The BH1600FVC (Analog Output Type) and BH1710FVC (Digital Output Type) light sensors are suitable for portable electronic devices such as mobile phones as well as LCD TVs. The company will begin shipping samples early in January, and mass production will commence in April at a monthly rate of 1 million units for BH1600FVC and 2 million units for BH1710FVC.
According to Rohm, the products boast of spectral sensitivity the same level as that of the photopic luminous efficiency of the human eye, which allows a wider range of illumination intensities from darkness to direct sunlight. The analog output type also features a two-level output current gain adjustment, while the digital output type has a 16bit AC/DC converter and can directly deliver the illumination intensity digitally.
Rohm Apollo Device Co. Ltd, one of the company's subsidiaries, will take the primary stage of production, while Rohm Fukuoka Co. Ltd will be processing the secondary stage of production for the new light sensors.
