Suppliers of school bags in mainland China, Taiwan and India are stepping up R&D to boost production of functional and durable designs that also have improved aesthetic appeal.

The latest models come in backpack, shoulder, trolley and messenger types. They feature zipped multiple compartments and pockets that serve as organizers for beverage containers, lunch boxes, books and umbrellas.

Companies are releasing versions with sturdier, more-rigid handles and wider straps to avoid sudden breaks and arm strains. In addition, designs have padded or adjustable shoulder straps for durability and ease of use.

To enhance the appeal of new school bags, suppliers are offering models with cartoon and animal motifs. They come in vibrant shades of red, pink, orange, yellow, blue and green.

Companies are also embellishing designs with embroidery, beads and metal accessories. Some school bags feature a stuffed plush toy that can be removed for children to play with.

In the mainland and Taiwan, most makers employ nylon because it is lightweight, durable and easy to care for. Polyester and cotton are often adopted as well.

To meet demand for environment-friendly designs, a number of companies are launching models in PU, PET or TPU.

Suppliers are also using microfiber on new school bags. Designs in this supple material are breathable and water-resistant. In addition, this type of fabric can be dyed in a wider range of colors.

In India, most companies are adopting synthetic leather, denim and canvas in releases. Makers typically source fabric from well-known local textile providers in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and West Bengal.

The range from ISO-compliant Quanzhou Xinghai Bags Co. Ltd includes girls’ backpacks adorned with glitter patterns.

School bags account for more than 20 percent of Quanzhou Xinghai’s output. Diaper, beach, cosmetic and
messenger bags are also offered. The company exports mainly to Europe and North America.

In Taiwan, a number of suppliers are offering designs with zipped pockets and compartments for added storage. The majority of releases use PVC-backed fabric for water resistance.

Willkomm Development Ltd, another Taiwan-based supplier, offers EN 71-compliant school bags that are exported mainly to the EU. The company employs environment-friendly materials such as TPU, PET and PU on most products.
