China (mainland) To comply with the European Union's (EU) e-waste management and disposal requirements, the China Communications Standards Association (CCSA) has set up the Special Task Team for Environmental Protection. The task force will formulate standards for recycling e-waste and testing for harmful chemicals in electronic products– the latter being compulsory.
The EU has been implementing Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive since August 2005, and the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electronical and electronic equipment (RoHS) directive since July 2006.
Once the CCSA-formulated standard is in place, all telecommunications products from mainland China manufacturers are required to undergo testing before being distributed to various EU markets. This move is hoped to reduce losses suffered by the regions manufacturers and suppliers resulting from export bans to EU countries. In Guangdong province alone, losses are estimated to reach several million dollars each year due to non-compliance to the WEEE and RoHS directives, according to local media reports.
