Specialized compartments and constructions define the latest car organizers from China.

Suppliers are focusing on such value-added designs to maximize growth opportunities in this sunrise industry. Although exports took off only in 2005, many makers are already intent on cultivating the midrange and high-end segments.

Shipped primarily to the aftermarket, general-purpose releases feature pockets structured to hold specific items securely in place. Slots for beverage bottles and cans are increasingly being added in hanging models. Pen, tissue box, PDA and mobile phone compartments are also becoming more common.

To stir buyer interest further, a number of companies are launching application-specific designs. The category currently accounts for 20 to 30 percent of China’s exports.

The range includes mobile office desk solutions. Models are usually fitted with large foldout trays, which can function as laptop tables. The platform is often made of high-impact plastic in a skid-resistant finish. Versions that attach to seats and steering wheels are offered.

Designs for sports gear and equipment are also being introduced. Because of storage requirements, these come in larger dimensions and are therefore priced 20 to 30 percent higher than general-purpose types. Constructions are suitable for floorboard mounting.

Further, some suppliers are starting to offer car organizers that double as litter bags. Strapped around the headrest, most models feature a closure or lid to hide the trash. Collapsible bin designs typically have an underside Velcro strip, allowing these to stay in a fixed position.

Models developed specifically for storing first aid, cleaning, emergency, and child care paraphernalia are now available as well.

Structure, size and material type are the key determinants of pricing and market positioning in the line.

Organizers that are mounted on the car seat target the low-end and midrange segments, making up the biggest category in China. Prices range from $1 to $10.

Models are usually attached to the headrest, although some are secured further through straps that tie around the seat.

Equipped with four to seven compartments, traditional designs hang over the back of the seat. Newer versions can be placed on the side panel, where they will be easier for drivers to reach.

Hanging seat organizers from China commonly feature mesh front pockets, which permit quick access to frequently used items.

Floorboard types that sit on the car’s trunk or cargo area are also widely available. Larger in size, these are often marketed as upscale products, with prices between $2 and $15. Most are made of corrugated PP boards and have an aluminum alloy frame. The storage space generally ranges from 15 to more than 120dm3.

There are usually two or three interior compartments.

In new designs, removable and adjustable dividers are employed as well, enabling users to optimize storage space. Zipped pouches are added for carrying small articles. The walls can be padded with foam to protect delicate paraphernalia.

For the exterior, suppliers fit models with a mesh front pocket. Side compartments have a Velcro or zipper closure.

The base can come with Velcro grip strips to keep the product in place. To boost portability, carry handles and foldable constructions are also adopted.

Apart from these, China has a selection of visor and map organizers. The former are fitted with five to 10 holders, including slip-in CD pockets and slots for keys and ID cards.

Typical map cases fold up compactly for storage in the car’s glove compartment or center console.

In terms of materials, low-end models from China are commonly made of nonwoven fabric. Strong, abrasion-resistant and resilient, nylon and polyester are employed in upscale designs. Versions with an oxford weave are preferred for their soft and lightweight construction.

To ensure durability, many companies are tapping high-density 600d nylon and polyester oxford in their latest releases. The fabric is usually coated with PU for water resistance.

Prices have remained steady during past months, with the cost of materials starting to decline and the yuan’s appreciation slowing.

China’s exports of car organizers continue to be in an upturn, with sales increasing 20 to 30 percent in the past couple of months.

More than 70 percent of output is shipped abroad, mainly to distributors and retailers in the EU and the US.

Large companies usually export more than 1 million pieces each year. For those operating on a smaller scale, annual shipments reach up to 500,000 pieces.

Suppliers often offer car organizers as a secondary product line that accounts for less than 20 percent of total sales. Most started out either as bag or luggage manufacturers or trading companies specializing in automotive accessories.
