Diverse interpretations
Hong Kong makers offer models in cornhusk, raffia and rattan, and wheat, paper and PP straw. Rigid structures are more popular because slouchy shapes are difficult to achieve without compromising sturdiness. Size is currently being taken to both extremes: either large beach bags that exceed 40cm in length, or tiny shoulder slings and clutches. Designs using the materials' unprocessed hues dominate. These are accented with printed lining and bows, crocheted overlays and applique, embroidery, buttons and sequins. Graphic styles are created using leather trimmings and handles in bold hues. For dyed models, color blocking is a widely applied theme. Among the suppliers interviewed for this report, Able Network Co. offers dyed bags lined with patterned fabric for a fun look. Natural-colored designs have different plaiting patterns to achieve a border. The latest releases from Kandoo Mfg Co. Ltd are horizontal totes embroidered with flowers. The handles, openings and corners of the bags are reinforced with fabric or PVC leather. Oriental Element Industrial Ltd's new collection features black, gray and metallic hues. Nautical motifs such as red, blue and white stripes are available as well. A slim silhouette is the key trend this season for T.K. Rich. Models come in contrasting or monochromatic schemes.
