Mainland China is home to an estimated 7,000 manufacturers of precision-machined metal parts. About 36 percent of the supplier base consists of midsize companies with annual revenue ranging from $1.2 to $5 million. Large makers account for 11 percent of suppliers in the mainland, and generate more than $10 million in sales every year. The rest operate on a small scale.

Suppliers are clustered in the provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Shandong and Liaoning.

Mainland makers export mostly to Asia, the US, the UK and the EU. Shipments from larger companies usually bear in-house brands.

In Taiwan, there are more than 100 suppliers of precision-machined parts. Many are service providers that facilitate communication between factories and overseas OEMs. They also offer QC support and buyer assistance in exploring cost-efficient options.

Only about half of suppliers in the island run their own factories. They have small to midsize operations and are based in Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung and Changhua.

Taiwan companies cater to the high-growth electronics, equipment and automotive segments. The major export markets are Japan, Europe and North America.

Chang Po Associated Ltd

Chang Po's selection of precision-machined metal parts consists mostly of brackets, gears, shafts and screws for painting and punching equipment. The line accounts for half of the company's revenue and is exported to the US.

Machining is done in a factory in Changhua, central Taiwan. The plant has 10 employees who operate automated production equipment and conduct QC.

Chang Po's office in Taipei has five sales and engineering personnel.
