Industry overview There are about 200 suppliers of motorcycle engines in mainland China, 75 percent of which are export-oriented. Production is concentrated in Chongqing and the provinces of Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangsu. In 2006, the mainland's motorcycle engine exports amounted to more than $200 million. The Middle East, Africa and Asia are the major destinations. Engines with displacements of 50 to 150cc make up the majority of output in the mainland. High-power units, however, are also produced by large suppliers. Most companies export engines as a sideline to motorcycles, scooters and ATVs. In Taiwan, 10 companies dominate the island's production of motorcycle engines. The majority of output consists of 50 to 125cc models, and goes mainly to clients in the US and Europe. Makers have not shifted their focus to units with higher displacement. Engines from 250 to 500cc are usually applied to scooters rather than motorcycles. Aside from motorcycle engines, Taiwan companies manufacture related products such as mopeds, ATVs and scooters. Most models comply with CARB, EPA and Euro II and III standards.
