Industry overview

Mainland China has more than 500 suppliers of industrial electric motors. Makers congregate in the provinces of Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang, which are also the primary hubs for the manufacture of power hand tools, machinery and various vehicles.

Suppliers usually have more than 10 years of experience in the line. Many produce single- and three-phase motors alongside engines, portable power generators, gardening equipment and electrical tools because these require similar materials and processes. Some companies even offer ATVs and powered two-wheelers such as motorcycles, scooters and electric bikes.

The industry is generally export-oriented. About 75 percent of output is sent abroad, mostly to the US, Japan and the EU. South America, Africa and the Middle East are also key destinations, especially for products under in-house brands.

In contrast, Taiwan's 10 or so suppliers focus on the domestic market. Targeting makers of medical, food processing, fitness and other types of equipment, these companies typically offer three-phase induction models.

Less than 40 percent of the industry's total output is sent abroad. Asia, North America and Europe account for the majority of shipments.

Chao Kuang Yuan specializes in electric fans. Industrial motors are manufactured as an auxiliary line, accounting for 30 percent of output. These are exported primarily to South America, Africa and the Middle East.

Three R&D specialists develop two to three new motor designs each year. This team can also provide samples based on buyers' specifications within two months.

Production takes place in a 2,645sqm factory. The plant has 35 workers, three of whom perform QC.

Dalian Dalmo is an ISO 9001:2000-certified company specializing in industrial motors. Models are exported to Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America.

Designs are marketed under the in-house Dalmo brand, although OEM orders make up most of exports. With 35 R&D specialists, the company can develop samples based on buyers' specifications within 20 days.

Most manufacturing processes take place at a 50,000sqm plant in Dalian. Twenty-five workers perform quality inspections and product testing.

ISO 9001-certified Fukuta specializes in industrial motors. Production is mainly for the domestic market, but the company also exports to the EU and Asia. It attends international trade shows, primarily those in Germany and Japan.

Models are released mostly under the in-house Fukuta brand. OEM orders are accepted, with samples provided in 20 to 30 days.

The company operates two factories, one in Taichung and the other in Shanghai, mainland China. The former has a workforce of 80, while the latter has 60 employees.
