Industry overview There are about 400 exporters of flashing novelty lights in mainland China. They are based mainly in the provinces of Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang. The latest models are available in a range of designs, including animal, furniture, eyewear and holiday-themed versions. LEDs, which feature high energy-efficiency and long service life, are the most popular lighting source for this line. Some new products, however, utilize fiber-optic cables. Plastic is widely used for housings, because mainly of its low weight and ease of molding. While most companies source this material from suppliers in Guangdong province and Zhejiang, a growing number are procuring plastic from Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. The island is home to about 100 exporters of flashing novelty lights, who are located mostly in the northern and central areas. Some Taiwan makers, however, have moved their production facilities to the mainland, where costs are lower. Models use LEDs exclusively as the lighting source. Battery-powered products make up the majority of output. Prices for Taiwan-made models range from $0.30 for simple flashing pins to $6.30 for novelty color-changing flashlights. The latter are usually made of acrylic.
