Most makers use goat- and sheepskin, and employ a range of finishes to boost differentiation.
Many of the latest leather jackets from India adopt soft materials, with skins from sheep, lamb and goats dominating. Nappa types are often adopted as these are soft and thin, and have a fine grain and buttery texture ideal for garments.
For differentiation, suppliers employ a variety of finishes. Some makers, for example, drum-dye the leather for optimal penetration of colorants. Others hire skilled craftsmen to rub contrasting pigments on the skin's surface to highlight the natural grain or embossing in a process called handrubbing.
Men's versions often come in straight-cut styles while waist-length designs are popular in women's jackets. Models have multiple pockets, full-length zipper closures and polyester, cotton or satin lining. A number of releases feature stitch detailing.
