3D printing pushes the envelope with customization, environment-friendliness and unique materials.

3D printing could dramatically change the future of fashion by creating a new wave of fabrics that are customizable, made of unique materials and can be manufactured with the least wastage.

This is the goal of architect Bradley Rothenberg, who owns the eponymous studio in New York, where design studios and retail stores can create clothing and fashion accessories using only 3D printers. Rothenberg's work was on full display at the 2013 Victoria's secret show.

3D printing allows designers to create apparel that is tailor-made to a person's exact body type. Even the fabric's construction depends on the designer's whim. A portion of the garment, for instance, can be soft and sheer, while another part can thick and structured.

The amount of environmental strain caused by traditional textile factories can be considerably reduced with 3D printing. Being an additive process where one starts with powder and hardening it selectively until the material is made, 3D printing veers away from the conventional cutting and snipping of fabrics that result in a huge amout of wastage. Additionally, leftover powder can be still be used in creating another piece.
