Gizmos and gadgets representing major and emerging trends were exhibited at the Global Sources Electronics show from April 11 to 14. Products enabling greater connectivity among people and things were especially in the spotlight.

Here are 5 big trends at the show:

1. Smart home: Exhibitors demonstrated the smart home concept with an array of wirelessly networked devices and solutions covering security, lighting, appliances and entertainment.

2. Internet of Vehicles: In car electronics, the notion of "Internet of Vehicles" or IoV is translated into numerous dash cams with a built-in DVR, a DVR with Wi-Fi and 4G connectivity, and mainstay HD multimedia players that interface with mobile devices.

3. Virtual reality headsets: Virtual reality gaming advances via a headset that does not need to be connected to a smartphone or PC, and a host of special keyboards, mice and mouse pads designed to take simulation a notch richer.

4. 3D printing: Rule-changing technologies are underway as 3D printers graced the floor and were joined by 3D pens. Suppliers of compatible filaments also exhibited at the show.

5. USB-C: The nascent USB-C specification was prominent in a number of booths displaying interconnects products, signifying readiness for this rallying technology against rival standards.
