From ecological and ethical consciousness to preference for comfort and stylish looks, a more mature consumer base is prompting big changes to the industry.

The global activewear market continues its upward momentum, thanks to the growing wellness trend and rising involvement in sports among consumers. Shoppers, however, millennials especially, are becoming increasingly mindful of their purchasing decisions, prompting brands and manufacturers to implement big changes.

From ecological and ethical consciousness to comfort and stylish looks, the trends below reflect not a just a growing market but also an industry catering to a more mature consumer base.

Sustainability: More leading brands and manufacturers are adopting materials and processes that do not harm the environment. The use of recycled materials such as fibers derived from PET bottles and plastic wastes from the ocean are among the recent breakthroughs not only in activewear but the garments industry in general. Ground coffee beans, which boast deodorizing property, are likewise being utilized.

Ethically sound: A number of brands are also taking an ethical stand against human and animal cruelty. Outdoor giant The North Face, for example, uses only responsibly sourced down while US-based startup Girlfriend Collective, not only adopts recycled fibers for its leggings line, but makes sure that working conditions in their factories meet international safety standards.

Seamless designs: There is more to seamless activewear than just style. Granted, such designs are good to look at and flattering, but these also have compression and four-way stretch features, helping promote blood circulation and allowing full-range of motion.

Street style: Athleisure has risen in popularity in recent years and is based on two factors: fashion and function. Bright colors and bold logos are currently on-trend.

Plus-size releases: A shift toward inclusivity in fashion and sports has paved the way for plus-size activewear. Many brands are expanding their size range, moving beyond XS to L and offering pieces up to XXXL in size.
