Future releases of rectifiers will continue to be driven by the trends for miniaturization and high component performance. To meet both criteria, there have been departures from the predominantly used silicon technology to better semiconductor materials such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN).
These alternative inputs are expected to be widely adopted in the coming years, especially in ultrafast-recovery rectifiers for switching power supplies, inverters and other applications requiring high-reliability components.
In China, manufacturers offer mostly silicon-based rectifiers, including bridge, fast-diode and thyristor types. These components are available in axial-lead and SMD configurations, with the former still outnumbering units for surface mounting based on shipments.
These rectifiers are widely used in household appliances, consumer and automotive electronics, power systems, and communications and industrial products.
Suppliers use diodes, leads and shells and other materials sourced from domestic companies, turning to imported inputs only on buyers’ requests. Just the same, they ensure rectifiers produced comply with industry standards such as UL, CE and RoHS.
Material costs have been relatively stable, keeping prices of rectifiers almost unchanged. This trend is expected to persist in the months.
