Asus has unveiled PCs, tablets and smartphones, for which the company is best known. Mixed in with those announcements was Zenbo, an interactive robot with a focus on seniors and children.

Anyone can use Zenbo, but Asus emphasized how the robot could be employed to help older and younger users. Zenbo can send a picture to family members to alert them of an emergency situation at home such as when an elderly falls down and the like. Zenbo can also entertain children by singing, dancing and telling stories. Asus said Zenbo can even act as a tutor.

These are functions that have been seen in home robots before. With a price tag of $599, Zenbo might not impress a lot of people. The product does show, however, that more companies are betting on the robotics market.

Home helpers seem to be another popular option. The Amazon Echo has done surprisingly well as a kind of always-listening smart home hub, but the disembodied voice might be disconcerting to some. There is something a little more personal about having a robot with a face to talk to.

China makers already make similar interactive robots for the home at lower price points. The differentiator in this market will be the services that run on the robot. Those coming out of China are largely using some custom version of Android.
