More Brazil consumers are being drawn to cosmetics in larger packaging, a study by international market intelligence firm Mintel reveals.
This comes as high unemployment and inflation rates continue to beset the South America nation, leaving consumers with limited spending power.
According to Julia Martins, beauty and personal care analyst at Mintel, buying products in jumbo packaging results in fewer trips to retail stores, giving consumers a perception that they are spending less. Items in large containers also last longer and allow family members to share personal care and beauty products.
Manufacturing large-sized cosmetics in not exactly new in Brazil but it was previously limited to the professional beauty sector. The market has now reached family level with end users putting more emphasis on savings.
Sustainability is also playing a significant role in the popularity of larger-volume cosmetics as these entail less container disposal, which has a great impact on the environment. Green practices are especially popular for millennials, in which 39 percent of those surveyed said they would opt for ecologically conscious brands.
This shift towards family-sized containers goes against the trend of small and sophisticated packaging common in the luxury segment dominated by big international brands. Prestige labels, however, are currently feeling the effects of Brazil's economic downturn with many consumers preferring local brands.
