LED bulbs are not the only lighting fixtures that are getting smart upgrades. Ceiling lights, in various shapes and configurations, are becoming more intelligent as well. Here are some of the “hot” features smart ceiling lights currently have:
• Motion detection- The technology has been around for some time in security and pathway lights but motion-activated ceiling lights are increasing in number as well.
New sensors have been developed for and integrated or paired with ceiling lights and these are not just capable of keeping lights on while there is movement. New sensors can also help manage both lighting and other home systems. One example is New York-based electrical manufacturer Leviton’s LED Ceiling Occupancy Sensor that comes in ultrasonic and passive IR versions and suits closets, basements and workrooms but is only for indoor spaces.
An example of motion sensor ceiling light that can work indoors and outdoors is Mr. Beams multipurpose ceiling light for it is wireless and capable of motion detection reaching 20ft. It shuts off automatically after 30 seconds of no motion.
• Bluetooth, Wi-Fi connectivity- This allows ceiling lights to connect with smartphones and double as music players just like smart light bulbs. In China, ceiling lights with brightness or lighting modes that sync with the music they play have already emerged.
• Air-purifying function- Besides sensors, ionizers that eliminate air impurities are being added by a few ceiling light makers. One example is ONLLA’s air-purifying ceiling light that also connects to the cloud.
