Massachusetts-based Converse announced that it has come out with a new design for their Chuck Taylor sneakers.
The first Chuck Taylor came out in 1917, and was worn by amateur and professional basketball players throughout the 70s. Its popularity continued among today's skater subculture, and the shoes remains a favorite for many celebrities and artists.
Known as the Chuck II, the latest version has a Nike Lunarlon sock liner for improved shock absorption. The footwear also comes with a padded nonslip tongue and perforated microsuede lining to wick away moisture. The new model also features Tencel canvas uppers with an embroidered All Star logo on the inner heel. The eyelets are debossed and painted eyelets.
High-tops are priced at $75 while low-cuts go for $70, a $15 difference from the original version.
According to Richard Copcutt, Vice President and General Manager of Converse All Star, comfort was the primary reason for modifying the iconic footwear. Their surveys found that most wearers wanted their Chuck Taylors to be more comfortable. Purists, however, do not have to worry as the Nike-owned brand would be selling the old ones along with the Chuck II.
