Suppliers of men's T-shirts in India are veering away from basic pieces by launching trendy styles to avoid stiff competition with their counterparts in Bangladesh. The latest releases feature eye-catching designs and come in a variety of finishes that enhance texture.

Popular themes include sports, marine and slice of life. Patterns can be flock, discharge, reactive or digital printed. Some suppliers use MHM or carousel silk-screening machines for efficient and accurate high-volume logo placement. Multicolor models with stripes and other designs are likewise offered.

Crystals, embroidery, patchwork and applique serve as embellishments. Ribbed contrast piping, contrast color side panels and front buttons also enhance the visual appeal.

The prints of ISO 9001:2000-certified NCJ Garments’ models are applied using dyes, oil, gel, glitter and plastisol. The supplier has discharge- and foil-printed, and spray-painted versions as well. Some pieces are adorned with applique embroidery at the chest.

Venus Garments (India) Ltd's releases can have foil embroidery, and pigment, discharge and flock prints. The company has knitting, dyeing, printing, stentering, compacting and finishing equipment in its ISO 9001:2000-certified factory in Punjab state.

In terms of colors, different shades of blue, yellow, orange and red are widely used. Earth tones are popular as well. Black, beige and off-white pieces are likewise available. Hues are often yarn-, vat- or space-dyed. Makers also employ soft-flow dyeing to impart a supple feel and enhance fade resistance. Suppliers are adopting combination colors in many models. Demand for basic solid-hued pieces, however, are still strong.

The majority of releases are made of cotton, with India being the second-largest cotton producer in the world. The fabric comes in combed, semicombed, knitted, jersey, interlock and fleece constructions. For improved strength, stain resistance and stretch, cotton is commonly blended with polyester, viscose, nylon or spandex. This approach also helps reduce costs. A number of makers use organic cotton and recycled fabrics as well.

Cotton is mainly sourced from Tiruppur district in Tamil Nadu and Ludhiana city in Punjab. These areas are also the country's leading production hubs for T-shirts.

Men's T-shirts from India are available in round, crew, high and V-neck styles.

Models from Stellar Clothing Co. feature Lycra or DuPont ribbed necks for enhanced comfort and shape retention. The supplier's releases are made of 95:5 cotton-spandex or pure polyester. The latter versions have sublimation prints. Pieces are soft-flow dyed to improve colorfastness.

Prices of India-made men's T-shirts start at $1.90 and top $6.50. The materials and designs differentiate the quotes. Washes and finishes can raise prices between 10 and 15 percent.

Low-end models utilize 35:65 cotton-polyester or pure polyester single jersey, weighing 140 to 180gsm. These are solid-colored pieces with minimal embellishments. Products go for $1.90 to $2.50.

Midrange releases adopt 100 percent cotton or 50:50 cotton-polyester. These come in semicombed, single jersey, pique or fleece construction. Fabric weight is 200 to 220gsm. Spandex can be blended for improved stretch. Models may have foil-printed, embossed and spray-painted patterns. Some feature ribbed Lycra necks. Prices are $2.60 to $4.
