E-bikes: Cycling to a sustainable future

The electric bike (e-bike) market is one of the few industries that has witnessed a breakthrough moment amid the pandemic-induced lockdown and travel restrictions.

Valued at $16.86 billion in 2020, the global market is expected to reach $52.36 billion by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 16 percent as noted by Fortune Business Insights. The report added that the Asia-Pacific region was worth $8.72 billion in 2020, with China dominating the market share, owing to the establishment of cycling infrastructure to decongest public transportation systems and combat the worsening air pollution. Europe is also expected to significantly develop.

In the UK, 11 percent of the surveyed respondents by world-known cycling company Shimano said that they are more likely to depend on e-bikes now than before the pandemic. Of those who were a part of the study, individuals 25 to 34 years of age were the highest age group to consider using or buying e-bikes, followed by 35- to 44-year-olds. In the US, e-bike sales increased by 145 percent in 2020 compared to 2019 according to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) report.

Among the factors driving market growth include the increasing eco-consciousness among individuals and adoption of shared micro-mobility as a means of public transportation, the rapid technological advancements that are making the market more attractive to consumers and improved government policies and support to the use of sustainable transportation.
