Electric vehicle charging is continually being improved to enable faster and more efficient recharging that will encourage wider adoption of this transformative green technology.

In China, which has the world’s largest number of EVs on the road, manufacturers of charging stations are developing units with higher power and capability to deliver at faster speeds. They are aiming to exceed the 250kW threshold at which a typical EV can replenish up to 80 percent of power within 30 minutes.

Top EV maker BYD made a breakthrough in early 2025, realizing up to 1,000V charging voltage, 1,000A current and 1MW power. This technology can ensure a range of 400km within 5 minutes of charging. The company has announced that it will install 20,000 such stations throughout the country in the next one or two years.

Commonly available EV charging stations include DC and AC types that are compliant with UL, CE, PSE, FCC, CCC and RoHS requirements.

Typical DC units are in the 200 to 1,000VDC range, with up to 500A rated current and 30 to 640kW rated power, while AC counterparts have 220 or 380VAC, 16 to 63A and 3.7 to 22kW. Both types have built-in protection from over- and undervoltage, overcurrent, -temperature, short circuits, current leakage and lightning. Based on water resistance, there are IP54 to IP68-rated options.

These products are usually made using charging and LCD modules, relays, meters, plugs and cases sourced from domestic providers. Intense competition has been keeping EV charging station prices stable.
