EU compliance update: 2,600+ baby clothing recalls

Clothing with cords or drawstrings pose a strangulation risk to young children.

In its latest EU compliance update, ProductIP reported that more than 2,600 recalls were notified via RAPEX for children's clothing with dangerous cords or drawstrings over the past years.

The update further said weekly recalls of children clothing use this reason: "The product poses a risk of strangulation and injuries due to the presence of cords in the neck and waist areas. The product does not comply with the relevant European standard EN 14682." A harmonized standard for the GPSD 2001/95/EC, EN 14682 was published to minimize the risks of accidental and fatal entrapment by cords or drawstrings on children's clothing.

PROSAFE, meanwhile, has published information on the safety cords and drawstrings in children's clothing, including a comprehensive risk assessment template and videos.
