Located in Guangdong’s Pearl River Delta, the city of Dongguan is home to hundreds of suppliers of switches and sockets. This manufacturing pool consists mostly of small and midsize enterprises, with major companies including Dongguan Lituo, Dongguan Hooya, Dongguan Huansheng and Dongguan Dealon.
Their combined shipments contribute in no small measure to China’s total revenue for these categories, which reached $3.675 billion in 2023 and led in the Asia-Pacific region’s market. An upward trend is expected through 2027, with ZhongJin Industry & Information Research forecasting $4.43 billion by then.
In the global market, switches and sockets will continue to do well, with a projected value of $21.83 billion in 2030 from $16.47 billion in 2023, according to ChinaIRN.
Encouraged by this outlook, Chinese manufacturers are keeping R&D active to turn out switches and sockets with higher reliability and longer operating life span. In addition to conventional types, they will extend this effort to smart variants.
Providing an impetus is the smart home market. Globally, this application is estimated to have hit $154.4 billion in 2024 and expand to $231.6 billion by 2028 at a CAGR of 10.67 percent, according to Statista. It is also a sizeable sector in China, posting $99.4 billion in value in 2023, approximately $109 billion in 2024 and likely $118.5 billion in 2025 based on projections made by AskCI.
Chinese companies hope to gain confidence in other markets as well, especially as higher tariffs have affected exports to the Middle East. In September 2024, the Gulf Cooperation Council began imposing anti-dumping measures on imports of electric connectors, switches, sockets and plugs from China.
As of this writing, there are also fresh complications in the US market from a new round of tariffs. This leaves Europe, Asia-Pacific and Southeast Asia as secure export destinations while Chinese suppliers plan to boost market presence in South America and Russia.
Dongguan-made switches, sockets
Various switches can be sourced from Dongguan for household appliances, computers and peripherals, A/V and communication equipment, security products and electric devices. They include push-button, rotary, tactile and slide types as well as smart and SMD kinds.
The typical specifications are a maximum contact resistance of 10mohms, minimum insulation resistance of over 100Mohms and life span exceeding 5,000 cycles.
Manufacturers remain open to turning out switches based on custom requirements. Most ensure their products meet industry safety standards such as UL, CE and RoHS.
In the socket category, AC/DC units for home, commercial, industrial, automotive electronics and medical applications are widely available. These have built-in features such as water, dust, corrosion, impact and UV resistance and over 3,000-cycle life span.
Common units have 30mohm maximum contact resistance and 100Mohm minimum insulation resistance. They comply with UL, cUL CE, VDE, CCC and RoHS standards.
Companies source copper, gold, silver, nickel, PVC, PP, PE, ABS and other materials from domestic or foreign providers as required by customers. Input costs, except for copper, were generally stable in the past 12 months and are expected to stay so throughout 2024 and keep prices of switches and sockets flat.
Thriving industrial ecosystem
One of the key cities forming part of the Greater Bay Area, Dongguan boasts an industrial pool of 15 leading companies, 14,000 large-scale manufacturers and 200,000 SMEs.
In 2024, this economic hub realized 4.6 percent growth, the second highest in terms of GDP increase and ranked fourth overall among the 21 cities of Guangdong, according to GDToday, a news website run by the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.
