Gallery View: Aluminum PCBs push past 2W/mK thermal conductivity

With lower thermal resistance, higher thermal conductivity, longer operating life and higher reliability compared to FR-4 boards and better mechanical performance than ceramic units, aluminum PCBs are enjoying steady demand. They are widely used in LED lighting, communications and A/V equipment, office automation and automotive applications.

Building on these product advantages and enhancing capability for customization, suppliers in China are planning to introduce more boards with thermal conductivity higher than 1 to 2W/mK. Some have already breached this range, including Dongguan Ya-Fu and Guangdong Shengyi that have respectively reached 2.5 to 3W/mK and 4.35W/mK.

Mainstream aluminum PCBs from Chinese manufacturers are available in single- and double-sided variants, and have 4mil minimum line width and spacing, 1 to 10oz copper, HAL, lead-free HAL, OSP or immersion gold surface finish and 0.4 to 3.4mm board thickness. These are made of pure aluminum, aluminum and magnesium alloy, and aluminum or magnesium and silicon alloy. Products are RoHS-compliant and UL-listed.

Aluminum base materials, copper foils and thermal conductive adhesives come from domestic or foreign companies as required. Although some suppliers quoted slightly higher to offset the rise in input costs in 2020, most kept prices at existing levels. Rates are expected to remain stable throughout 2021.
