The use of cells based on silicon alternatives with higher energy yield is gaining traction in the production of solar panel modules.
The push for higher conversion efficiency and reliability remains a strong trend in R&D efforts on solar panel modules. This has led to the adoption of solar cells that use nonsilicon semiconductor materials such as gallium arsenide (GaAs), gallium indium phosphide (GaInP) and copper indium selenide (CIS). These outperform silicon-based monocrystalline and polycrystalline cells in terms of efficiency and reliability, in addition to being lightweight and flexible owing to the thin-film technology used.
Thin-film solar panel modules are also gaining suppliers' attention in China. However, at present, only a few are engaged in the development and production of GaInP and CIS kinds due to the high technology threshold.
Current manufacturing emphasis is on monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels. The former type has comparatively higher conversion efficiency and reliability and a longer operating life span but is more expensive. Amorphous silicon solar panel modules are also part of the product range in China, offered as a low-cost option to polycrystalline types.
Chinese companies target residential, commercial, traffic, communications and automotive applications, and solar power plants.
They source materials such as tempered glass, EVA and TPT from domestic providers, while solar cells are manufactured in-house or outsourced. Despite an increase in input costs, most suppliers kept their product prices flat in 2020 to stay competitive, according to companies interviewed by Global Sources Electronic Components. Product prices are expected to stabilize in the coming months and through early 2022.
