Manufacturers of ceramic capacitors in China continue to push product development toward smaller sizes and higher capacitance ratings.
Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) hold more than 90 percent market share in their category thanks to their wide adoption in smartphones, PCs, A/V devices, networking equipment and automotive electronics. Besides their ultrasmall size, MLCCs boast high withstand voltage, high temperature resistance, and wide capacitance range compared to single-layer designs.
As terminal products shrink in size, Chinese producers' miniaturization efforts continue, led by large companies that aim to offer 01005 and eventually 008004 units. At present, Fenghua is the only supplier with a 01005 to 2220 series. Mainstream MLCCs come in 0201, 0402, 0603, 0805, 1206 and 1210 packages, with the first three kinds dominating China's shipments.
Boosting capacitance is also on the agenda. Suppliers hope to develop X5R and Y5V BME ceramic capacitors with more than 100µF, which could replace aluminum and chip tantalum capacitors. The current range in China offers 1pF to 10µF capacitance and is based on COG, NP0, X7R, X5R, Y5V and Z5U dielectrics.
Manufacturers typically source ceramic powders, metal pastes and adhesives from domestic providers, turning to foreign companies only when required. Product prices increased in the past 12 months due to a short supply of materials that resulted in higher costs. Most suppliers interviewed by Global Sources Electronic Components predict quotes will stabilize or rise slightly in the next six months.
