Manufacturers of power supplies for medical products ensure output meets safety requirements.
Portable medical devices are surging in popularity, driving companies in China's power supply sector targeting this market to boost the release of small units with high reliability and safety features. These are projected to reach $80 billion by the end of 2020, nearly double the earlier estimate as global demand skyrockets amid the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a report by Global Industry Analysts.
Widely available power supplies in China are open-frame and desktop types for hospital-use equipment, and wall-mount variants for home devices. These come in a range of specifications such as 1 to 1,000W rated power and 3.3 to 48V rated voltage. Isolation voltage is usually more than 4,000V. These products meet international standards CE, cUL, DOE Level V or VI and UL. They also conform to safety guidelines specific to medical electrical equipment, including UL 60601-1, EN 60601-1, IEC 60601, EN 55022, GB 9706.1, MOPP and 2xMOPP.
Customization is a common practice. Power supplies based on buyers' specifications take up between 20 and 60 percent of total shipment from manufacturers interviewed for this report.
Key production inputs include chips, passive components, PCBs, cases, wires and connectors. Chips come mostly from US and other foreign suppliers, and the rest of the components from domestic sources. The cost of manufacturing inputs did not fluctuate in the past 12 months, keeping product prices flat. Some companies lowered their quotes to cope with intense competition. This generally stable trend is expected to persist in 2021.
