A collaboration between Philips and carpet maker Desso, Luminous Carpets consist of light transmissive carpet tiles concealing a thin layer of LED lights. The diodes shine right through the carpet when switched on then disappear when switched off. The diodes are arranged in enclosed panels designed specifically to withstand wear and tear from heavy foot traffic, spillage and cleaning.

Representing the future of flooring, Luminous Carpets "communicate" various directional, informative and promotional messages and announcements via the programmable LED panels. The product can interface with most building management systems using Art-Net or KiNet, and messages can be preprogrammed or changed instantly using mobile or networked devices.

The product comes in four textures and 14 colors. Raised access floor, on-top and recessed installation options are available.

A word of caution, though. Philips does not see any practical use for Luminous Carpets in homes just yet. The product requires fairly intensive installation and a dedicated power source, according to CNet.com.

Luminous Carpets debuted in the North American market during Lightfair 2015 in New York City. It was showcased in the Elements of Architecture exhibition at the 2014 Venice Biennale.
