With an increasing need for environmental solutions, the global ozone generator industry has seen steady growth in recent years, with the COVID-19 pandemic boosting demand further. In China, the market reached $73.74 billion in 2019, rising 8.5 percent YoY and likely by 10 to 15 percent in 2020 and 2021, according to Qianzhan Research Institute.

Capitalizing on this upward trend, Chinese companies will raise output further in the coming months. They are also planning to enhance product efficiency and reliability while reducing power dissipation.

Key to improved ozone generator performance is the type of dielectric used. The common materials include quartz glass, ceramic, enamel and organic polymers. Quartz glass has temperature tolerance, corrosion resistance and thermal stability. Ceramic displays high melting point, mechanical strength and breakdown voltage. Enamel offers advantages of electrical strength, dielectric constant and corrosion resistance. Organic dielectrics can work under 145 C, and exhibit enhanced electric insulation, chemical corrosion resistance and flame retardancy.

China-made ozone generators are widely used in drinking water treatment, food processing and preservation, air sterilization, and the medical and industrial fields. Chinese manufacturers strictly follow national guidelines on design, production, installation and operation. Relevant standards include CJ/T322-2010 for water and waste water treatment and HJ/T 264-2006 technical requirements for environmental protection. There are also the GB5749-2006 for drinking water quality, the GB3095-2012 for ambient air quality, the Technical Standard for Disinfection, GB19303-2010 for food and medicine production quality management, and China's GMP validation guidelines.

The majority of China-based suppliers also ensure their products carry internationally recognized seals of safety approval, such as CE, CB, CSA, GS, LFGB, SASO and UL. In addition, they secure EMC, EMF, ETL and RoHS certifications.

Chinese manufacturers usually use quartz glass and ceramic dielectrics in small and midsize ozone generators, and enamel and organic polymers, such as PC, in midsize and large units.

With improved materials and sintering technology, water glass, also known as sodium silicate or soluble glass, has become popular for its enhanced cooling performance and protection from fouling.

Fujian Newland has introduced models with a water glass dielectric, which can churn out 130kg ozone per hour at an operating frequency below 5,000Hz. The company says it is the third in the world to haverealized this high a level of ozone output. Fujian Newland has acquired nine invention patents and several practical patents for this type of ozone generator.

Growing supplier pool

There are about 700 manufacturers of ozone generators in China. Most are domestic companies offering small and midsize models, while fewer than 20 produce large units. The latter group includes Qingdao Guolin and Jiangsu Suppon. Based on production scale, Taizhou Tongfang, Jiangsu Kanger and Beijing Tonglin are some of the major players.

The category has been attracting suppliers, with 46 entrants in 1H 2020 alone, according to the Qianzhan Research Institute. In 2018 and 2019, newly registered companies were 69 and 84.

As of the end of June 2020, there were 155, 153 and 111 manufacturers in the provinces of Shandong, Jiangsu and Guangzhou. Most are in the cities of Qingdao, Suzhou, Taizhou, Shenzhen and Dongguan.

The rest can be found in other areas of the Bohai Bay Rim Economic Region, the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta. Incoming players in this category will likely cluster in these locations.

Most Chinese companies export between 10 and 60 percent of their ozone generator output. The main markets include Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific region.

Suppliers interviewed by Global Sources Electronic Components anticipate higher demand over the next two years.

Mainstream selection

Widely available ozone generators from Chinese suppliers are corona discharge or high-voltage types. UV and electrolytic variants can also be sourced. Generators may be water- or air-cooled, and air- or oxygen-fed.

Ozone generators are described as small, medium or large units based on the amount of ozone generated per hour. The first two types represent the bulk of shipments.

Typical specifications include 50/60Hz, 100 to 1,000Hz or more than 1,000Hz operating frequency, 110 to 220V rated voltage and 80 to 240W power consumption.

Customization is generally accommodated.

All materials and components used by manufacturers in China come from domestic providers unless buyers specify other sources. Input costs did not fluctuate much in the past 12 months, but most manufacturers interviewed lowered their product prices slightly due to increased competition from new entrants. They expect this trend will continue throughout 2021.
