The global DIY video surveillance market has surpassed US$1 billion in 2014, the first time the market has grown so large. While this represents only about 7.5 percent of the total global video surveillance market, it is also anticipated to be a growth market in the next two years, according to IHS analyst Josh Woodhouse. The overall market is composed primarily of small business owners and consumers looking to add security to their homes. Overall, the US is the dominant consumer of DIY video surveillance solutions, with 65 percent of the overall market in 2014.

While the use of digital cameras is expected to increase in 2015, overall purchases of video cameras was split between analog and digital in 2014. Typically, cost-conscious buyers are purchasing an analog surveillance system consisting of cameras and a DVR. In 2015, however, the number of network-capable options available to such consumers are expected to grow that segment of the market.

Woodhouse explains:

“The biggest story in the consumer video surveillance market is the growth in demand for network equipment. According to the latest forecasts from IHS Technology, more than 11 million consumer and DIY network cameras will be shipped worldwide in 2015.The vast majority of consumer network cameras are what IHS terms standalone network cameras. These cameras are designed for consumers to operate the camera as a standalone surveillance system without the need for separate recording hardware by utilizing cloud or edge storage.”
