In a recent report, market research firm Transparency Market Research predicts that the overall global market for home automation systems will reach US$21.67 billion in 2020, from approximately US$5.3 billion in 2014. While overall growth is expected at a CAGR of 26.3 percent from 2013-2020, security and safety applications are expected to grow more quickly than the rest of the market.

The company expects the North American market to continue to remain the largest market for home automation; in 2013, North America held a majority of the global market. Nevertheless, European and Asia-Pacific markets are expected to grow significantly over this time period, and North America will account for 40 percent of the market in 2020, down from 51 percent. The report noted that in 2013, the overall market was essentially split between these three regions; the rest of the world had a trivial market share.

In all markets, safety and security – especially remote home monitoring solutions (including IP video cameras) – are expected to remain the single largest market segment, and will tend to be wireless systems. Wireless systems utilizing WiFi in particular are expected to drive the market, though secondary growth is expected from wired, power-line systems. These systems (utilizing protocols like Insteon) are expected to take a much larger share of home automation, but will remain second to WiFi-based protocols.
