Global Sources survey: Buyer confidence stays high

Posted: September 19, 2012

Major brands anticipate an increase in overall order volume.

Two-thirds of the world's leading retailers and brands surveyed by Global Sources plan to boost order volume in the second half of 2012 amid numerous global trade challenges. The 26 respondents, including El Corte Ingles, Intelbras and OfficeMax, generate more than $900 billion in sales annually.

Meanwhile, 15 percent of survey participants were more cautious, planning to keep purchases at current levels. The rest foresee a decrease.

Buyers also continue to trust mainland China for their sourcing needs. More than 80 percent of respondents will maintain or boost purchases from the mainland in the months ahead.

Higher export prices in the mainland were cited by 85 percent of respondents as one of the top three challenges they are currently facing. Close to 60 percent of buyers see cautious consumer spending as the second-biggest challenge. The appreciating yuan is of lesser concern, with about 38 percent of respondents saying this is a major issue.

A Business Development Manager from Intelbras said, "At this point in time, our target market demands more competitively priced goods. Therefore, to maintain our competitiveness, we must be cautious about suppliers' rising costs."
