To increase competitiveness in the medical and healthcare market, Chinese manufacturers of cable assemblies aim to release much more reliable and robust products in the next two years. Their goal is to narrow the technology gap with overseas rivals, achieve the best price-performance ratio and take advantage of domestic demand.
China’s market is forecast to reach about $1.3 billion, according to Medical Product Outsourcing, which also notes that “per capita spending on healthcare has increased nearly ten times over the last two decades.”
Mainstream cable assemblies for hospital- and home-use medical equipment from Chinese suppliers use connectors with gold- or nickel-plated copper alloy contacts and copper alloy or thermoplastic shells. Cables have bare or tinned copper conductors, and PEEK, PFA, ETFE, FEP or Teflon insulation.
By type, there are push-pull, spring, screw, board-to-board, D-sub, FPC and back-panel options. Variants with a locking device are available, as are water-resistant kinds with an IP65 to IP68 rating. Cables that are 1 to 3m are standard, although other lengths can be specified.
Key materials used, such as copper alloy, gold, nickel and plastic, are sourced domestically or from foreign providers, depending on buyers’ preferences. Their costs rose in 2021, pushing up product prices by 10 to 20 percent. In the months ahead, projections are hopeful.
24AWG/2C cable
Dongguan Hecon Electronics Co. Ltd’s 2,000mm-long cable assembly for medical equipment, the HC-CHML02200001, has a 3.5mm-diameter cable with two conductors of 24AWG wires and a gray PVC jacket. It is terminated with 4mm snap-style connectors.
